RISE #20: 7 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Maximize Online Video

Building Your Business Through Online Video

Think of about this for a second, you can shoot video with an inexpensive camera and upload it for free online for the world to see. Read that again.

Pause.

I believe we have underestimated the power of what online video can do for your business.

It is no longer just about the cat on the skateboard or the Spielberg online production.

From citizen journalism to online shows, there is an opportunity for nearly every business. Now, I’m not saying there isn’t hard work involved, of course there is (especially promoting), but the tools have never been easier to use.

For example, yesterday and earlier today I was on the front page of CNN talking about the iPad with quotes and a video I made (I promise to do a video next week on how I pulled this off). I know, crazy. I’m not saying this as shameless plug of bragging stupidity, but as an example that great content can be cheap to produce and the best stuff (pun intended) will rise to the top.

Here is the CNN home page. See my crazy mug towards the bottom?

That being said, the goal of videos shouldn’t be viral. Instead, functional for your business whether the goal is to educate, inspire, sell, recruit, entertain, introduce and many other functions.

First you need your weaponry:

It really is as easy as 1,2,3,4,5:
- Camera (which can be as easy as Flip Camera or Kodak Zi8 or even an iPhone)
- The Internet + Distribution Method (such as Blip.TV and Youtube or a solution such as Widget Realm or Brightcove)
- An Idea
- Promotional Strategy
- Monetize

7 Ideas On How You Can Maximize Online Video For Your Business

1. Interviews: Thought-leaders, customers, related to your industry, adds fun and personality.

2. Tips & Tricks: Related to your business.

3. Behind-The-Scenes: How things are made, a look behind the curtain.

4. Product Demo/Screencast: Keeping it authentic and not PR or tech-speak. Walk through your produce with a screencast of your computer screen. We are experimenting with Screenflow soon and I’ll make sure to put up some screencasts.

5. Video Contest: If you have a tiny bit of a tech-savvy crowd, try a video submitting content like The Best Job In The World. Remember to choose a prize your audience will actually like (on that note, congrats to the winner of the Google Nexus One phone from our contest Sarah Bandy).

6. Introducing: Simple. Introduce yourself on your website and your company. Have other team members introduce themselves as well. Add some personality.

7. Facebook Q&A: It is so easy to shoot video on Facebook. Try springing discussions with friends and followers by adding video to your page. Ask a question and spring on delicious discussion.

Give it a shot. Try it out. Don’t over plan and see if you can make video work for you and your business.

  • Great Article. Since meeting Gary Vee I've started doing video and seen the traffic on my site really pick up which I'm sure will translate into sales soon. Check out some of my video
  • Very cool! Good to see you taking action and Gary Vee is a big inspiration. He causes change.
  • As a company and an St Louis area entrepreneur, we are looking to go big with video in 2010. Your topic and features on video - including this CNN piece are awesome and very timely. Keep up the great work David.
  • Thanks, Kevin for the kind words. Got lucky to get on CNN :)

Can't wait to see what you do with video in 2010.
  • You confirmed my gut feeling to use and leverage video in my efforts to launch my new business! Loved this! Thanks for sharing the info.
  • Stephanie, absolutely get involved with video! I think it will be a massive weapon for you. Have any other questions on it? I plan on doing lots of posts about maximizing video.
  • NOW YOU'RE TALKING!!! found this a lot more helpful and can't wait to hear the monetizing side of this. Many of us purists, struggle with the right and wrong way to monetize our blogs. Have some ideas but have not brought them to fruition.
  • Glad you liked it! What would be most helpful to you?

Perhaps a series on monetizing? Different ways to do it and focus on one a day?

    What do you think?
  • I like it - go beyond google ad words though, that's completely useless
  • Google Adwords wasn't on the list :)

Are you talking about monetizing strategies or promotional strategies? Or both :)
  • I'm launching a daily video site called http://www.MobileTechTalk.com I am setting up now and can't wait to get started!
  • Awesome, Erik. Good luck! Go get 'em.
  • Great post and tips. Love it. Like the shout out for Brightcove. Online video platforms are the way to go, entrepreneurs or big business.

  • Anytime, Gary. I agree with that one. Business in general is made more personal by video.
  • Great ideas. I appreciate your help
  • Anytime, Sherrie. Cheers!
  • Dave- This is something we have been planning for a couple months now. Video is going to be very big in the next year and your tips are key and on point. I think video contest will be nice for my business :) P.S. I think I can pull off an interview with a smerf!!

  • John-

If you pull off an interview with a real smurf, I will be very, very, very impressed.

Excellent post. It really does get easier every day to create high quality video online. Love the 7 points and will definitely try to incorporate them into my video.
  • Awesome, Michelle. I can't wait to check them out.
  • Great post, and I love how you featured the CNN appearance.

As people read my book, Get Seen, they are finding out that it's not so hard to produce web video.

They're getting on CNN too. Fun times!
  • Steve- Your book makes me want to cry with happiness. We need to hop on Skype and chat about it :)
  • I think it's great that you pointed this out. I find it strange that more people don't use video because it's so easy and so engaging. It allows you to see the personality behind all that writing. I think it's only a matter of time before we see more and more multimedia content. People just need to come out of their shells.
  • Srinvas-

Great point. I see the next year being so critical for online video and more people giving it a shot. I love seeing personality behind brands, people, etc. It doesn't matter if they are loud and crazy or quiet and reserved.

I think it will be a BIG year for video and well into the future.
