RISE #26: Seth Godin On What It Takes To Be An Entrepreneur Way Beyond 2010

Smarter, Faster, Cheaper Entrepreneurship: An Interview With Seth Godin

If there is ever an interview that contains zero fluff, it is this one.

Seth Godin. The man, the myth, the legend. One of the top marketers of all time, one of my top business heroes and a personal mentor to me (whether he knows it or not) was nice enough to take time today to help all of us entrepreneurs.

Seth is not here to give any of us a step-by-step, paint-by-the-numbers road map, but instead to challenge, inspire and offer some absolutely killer ideas on how you can become an indispensable linchpin.

Plus, he has a cool office.

In this interview:

-Seth’s views on how the business world is changing and how you can become irreplaceable.

-Are you an entrepreneurs or a freelancer? (My FAVORITE point of the interview).

-His thoughts on building a community.

-Are you working or wasting time?

-Why you should not care how Seth creates/works and instead worry about how you create/work.

-Seth mentions a few people in this video. One of them being Venture Capitalist Fred Wilson.

For more on Seth, of course visit his blog (click on his head) and check out his Internet company Squidoo and try your hand at creating a lens on your favorite subject.

Must Read Books:

Do yourself a favor and pick up all of Seth’s books starting with Linchpin (amazon link) which I finished recently on your Kindle. Great views on the relationship of art, entrepreneurship and the changing world.

Here are five other personal favorites of mine written by Seth (amazon links):

1. Tribes

2. Purple Cow

3. Small Is The New Big

4. Free Prize Inside

5. Permission Marketing

How Does This Help You With Your Business?

In the interview, Seth challenges content providers not to simply ask for thoughts in the comments. Our goal has always been to create a community in our comments on RISE so we can all build amazing businesses with each others help and guidance.

Which begs the question: What tidbit from this interview will help you the most with your business?

Damn David...This is why I love your show. I hadn't watched this interview until right now.
I can't believe anyone could be the life changer Seth Godin is. Absolutely amazing...
Your show is one that no entrepreneur should miss.
    Thanks a lot...
  • Wow Mauricio - So nice of of you. So glad you found it useful.
  • Excellent example of an ageless, excellent interview. Thank you.
  • Thanks, Roger. So glad you enjoyed it!
  • Great interview. Loved Linchpin. I have been praising it to any and all who will listen.

The greatest lesson I got from the book is to be an artist in every part of my life. I have a good job (wonderful co-workers/doing what I love doing/time and energy to pursue interests outside of work) but Seth's ideas in Linchpin gave me something else: a new perspective. I decided to see my workplace as my studio.

Now I am going to my other studio, I am an artist, five days a week. My work experience has changed dramatically. I am having much more fun, finding interesting things to think about and do at work and, most importantly, not dividing my time as much between art time and work time. All of my time and life is starting to be art time.

Thanks for the book Seth and thanks for the wonderful interview David. i appreciate what you are doing.
  • Very cool, that was definitely one of the major things I took away from it as well! So glad you enjoyed it.
  • wow - great interview...gotta get the book now
    Thanks man

Big Takeaway - Freelancing vs Entrepreneurship and Lizard brain stuff
  • Kim
This is one of the better interviews I've seen done with Seth Godin on this book. It makes so much more sense to me now. So, thank you for that, David.

I don't always agree with Godin in his process, for instance, I think we need to invest in manufacturing....because we have abdicated this asset to the Chinese and this country is suffering terribly as a result. He's in some way (tho most people have gone this way especially as it relates to tech) contributed to the problem by from once upon a time ago having 70 people but now only 6....very good, efficient and I agree with that, even understand it, but truth is we've got a boatload of people we are doing nothing for in this country with these kinds of business models.

Not everybody can invest in manufacturing nor would I suggest they do that, but I do think we need to return some of that process back to the U.S. because we seem to have an abundance of internet gurus right now. We'll let Seth, you David, Chris Brogan and Guy Kawaski be the rulers but how many can fit into this space in the long run?

He's right that you need to stand out from the crowd, and Purple Cow is one of my most favorite books of all time because of that thought but I can't count on those in charge to understand or get that in fact that's why for the most part right now our models are failing us. Those in charge aren't looking for those who stand out....they are afraid of them. But we will go through some pain first before those old models hopefully die out (and the H.R. that needs to go with them). Perhaps Seth is just ahead of his time on this one.

I just made a decision to not go to a trade show I've gone to and been a part of for most of my career but in all good conscience can't go to now because I see so little innovation coming from it plus most of the companies and the industry association are still run and controlled by men yet the primary customer of those companies are women. They purchase 85% of the product. There are those in that industry who hold the power, stuff product into the channels, and nothing new is allowed to rise to the top (forgive the pun, not intended but you know appropo). It's taken me years to finally just say no to that mindset even though it's not clear how the future is going to shake out. But I'm pretty sure those models are no longer sustainable and it's just a matter of time before it finally crumbles and I'm betting I'm out in front of that process.

We take chances in the dark, and hopefully those choices play out well for us in the light.

    Nice interview. Thanks.
  • "We take chances in the dark, and hopefully those choices play out well for us in the light."

I love this line Kim. I have been thinking of how much I must trust myself when I don't know what to do or what is the right thing to do.

I think Seth hits it out of the park when he says there are no maps for this time in history or how we are going to be successful. We are making it up as we are doing it.

I agree we must find business models which allow people to work but I want people to have work that if filled with passion and financial well-being. Most jobs are not offering such an environment. I just thought of The Matrix: we can be an energy source for the machine or live with passion and find our success along our own path. I don't believe both are possible.
  • Kim - Very interesting thought-filled comment. And thank you for the kind words.

    A couple of quick notes:

    1. As a former woman's studies major, I also see the problems (although obviously as a man haven't experienced them) with 60-year-old white guys controlling products for women. Yikes.

    2. Interesting point on manufacturing. Meaning, essentially, not everyone can be a leader. There still has to be down and and dirty "work" to create things. And it is important to you to keep it over here (is that correct?)
  • This was an awesome interview. Seth is one cool dude and really lays it out there.
  • Brendan- Definitely. He pulls zero punches and I love it.
  • David,

Great interview. Can you imagine a world where everyone would take his advice to heart and ACT on it?

    Wow.
  • Wow that would be something. A world I would like to see.
  • David, nice job on the interview and thanks to Seth for giving it. First time to the site.
  • Damon - Thanks and welcome. Are you finding it useful?
  • Great interview, I like the ending: If it scares you, do it.
  • Nick-

    Makes you think, eh?
  • Awesome interview David! I really connected with what Seth had to say about art and the difference between a freelancer and an entrepreneur.

Definitely some changes I need to make in that area. Thanks :-)
  • Mike - Me too :)

As I mentioned in the interview, that was a massive change I had to start implementing and has improved things ten-fold on all sides of the coin.
  • Just bought one of Seth's book for a good read on my way to MacWorld.. Let him know I would of never picked up the book without this interview. Great job!
  • Erik - Very cool! I'm going to let him know! Have fun at macworld (jealous)
  • Good stuff man, thanks for sharing. Working through Linchpin now, but liking it so far.
  • Nathan - Very cool. Glad you enjoyed and I'd be interested to hear your impression of Linchpin.
  • I really liked the comments about entrepreneur vs freelancers. I realized during that discussion that I've been acting like a freelancer for the last year when I really want to be an entrepreneur.

I have to now figure out what it takes to make this transition...because as mentioned in the video I'm finding myself caught up with not only producing the material for each project, which is somewhat specialized, but also doing sales, which takes a huge amount of time. I would rather pay someone on commission to make the sales and just focus on what I love...producing the material for each project.

Both of you drove that home for me, and I now need to go back and take notes on the rest of the interview.
  • Reagan-

Same when I started several different companies. I definitely got caught in Freelancer mode.

I'm in literally the exact same boat as you. I love content creating and sparking conversations.

It took me about two years, but now our sales are completely outsources to a great company on a commission basis.

My life = so much better & happier.
  • alexahart
This is great! Thank you. Love the distinction between freelancers and entrepreneurs. Being creative and doing "art" is what makes people stand out!

Also like how Seth talks about efficiency and time wasters - TV, social media, and yes, even this blog.

The last question is interesting - We all work in dif ways, so whatever works for us is really what boils down to it.
  • Alexa,

    1. Loving the heart avatar. Very cool.

    2. Haha, everyone has their version of time wasters. I think the key he was differentiating was not to NOT do those things but be sure you don't confuse them with "work"... unless they are work :)

    3. Different strokes for different folks, eh?
  • amandamicroarts
This is great, thanks for sharing! He really is an inspiration. Reminds me of a similar post from another entrepreneur who's currently writing a book and considers Seth an inspiration: http://bit.ly/aWc2KT
  • Amanda -

Thanks for coming by. Seth is an inspiration to many!
  • Really great interview, David. He was a pleasure to listen to. "Do that which scares you" -- man, does that ever ring true!?
  • Thanks, Chris. It is so true the more I thought about it.
  • What I learned from your enthusiastic interview with Seth Godin was:

The process evolves from what we do best...which is our own definition of art.

Creating a connection to readers leads to success.

Fear and passion are great motivators!

    Very inspiring!

  • Thanks Caren for sharing!

I LOVE the art metaphor. Powerful stuff.
  • Mike Baltus
Wow...David, Great interview , both you and the guest really connected on many levels to bring really great content forward. I know nothing of Seth but will be researching him from now forward! The energy from both of you was magnificent! Great Job!
  • Mike - It was my absolute pleasure!
  • Great stuff. Thanks for sharing. Happy for you that you had that awesome interview! Keep bringing the info.
  • Jamie -

My pleasure. I wasn't going to do three interview days in a row, but this one was way too exciting and chalk full of information to sleep on until tomorrow.

    HAD to get it up!

    -D
  • John Kane
    Thanks to you both.
    Tasty interview.
One thing I really love about Seth is his joy of living shines so very bright.
    Thanks much and Freee too!
    John
  • John-

So true. He is a great guy.

Glad you found it tasty. :)

Maybe I'll put a boxed DVD together one day of the best ones you guys like?
  • I'm so jealous David!!!

I've been a student of Seth's for a while now and he's truly opened my mind to better ways of marketing and being a leader.

I love the way that he changed my perspective on "art" and how it influences Entrepreneurship!

Keep up the great content bro!
    -Chris Hughes
  • Chris -

Haha, it was my pleasure. I was so excited to share it with all the massive Godin fans (like you and I and many others) and also to folks who are maybe less familiar.

I love how art relates to entrepreneurship. So simple, yet interesting.
  • Amazing. Thank you David for conducting this interview.

If it scares you...then go for it. I love that. It means you are going outside your comfort zone to do something against the status quo.

Love how he says that the only thing any successful person have in common is the fact that they built a successful organization. Though I will need to argue about that because we are also told not to reinvent the wheel and to duplicate those who done it already which in my biz works very well. So kinda conflicting.

Love and work...this goes back to Gary Vaynerchuk's world because if you really love something...then it is not work. It's passion.

    Do it your way!!!
  • Roy -

It all comes down to passion and churning it into something viable, long lasting and awesome.

I don't know about you, but after interviewing Seth, I didn't need my morning coffee.
  • Too true. I am excited about this interview!!
  • Haha. Thanks for asking the last question. He won't share his process. I love that and respect it.

Why is it I want to know so bad? It must be my lizard brain.

Great job David. You asked some well thought out questions here. One thing I really enjoyed was how fired up and passionate Seth was in this interview. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the enthusiasm here.

Great work! Thanks for this. No shame for sharing your fanboy'ness towards Seth. My bookshelf is a big purple cow.
  • Noah - Haha, I did that one for you. I'm always listening :)

Seth was absolutely awesome and enthusiastic.

I know it was like meeting a famous hockey player for me...when I was 8.
  • lewishowes
This is great content for entrepreneurs... it's all about being able to leverage what we know, and start working less by delegating and making money in our sleep! Love it!
  • Absolutely Lewis. Trading time for $ can only go so far, eh?
  • This book has rocked my thinking. It brings together so many things we need to break out of mediocrity in a critical time. Thanks Seth!
  • A big, big thank you to Seth for inspiring us all.
