RISE #49: David Heinemeier Hansson Wants You To Rethink Entrepreneurship & Business

Exclusive Interview with David Heinemeier Hansson from 37 Signals , creator of Ruby On Rails, co-author of the amazing new entrepreneurship book Rework (Amazon Link).

There are few better to learn lessons on entrepreneurship and marketing than David Heinemeier Hansson and that is exactly what we dive into in this interview.

David and 37 Signals (a great software company with products such as Basecamp) are rewriting the rules of entrepreneurship. One by one. And not in theory. In practice. (if you want some fluff, you know what to do…go pet a bunny).

Taking on the cliche rules such as:

“Bigger Is Better”

“You need to have a really fancy, detailed business plan.”

“You have to shoot for being a billionaire to be considered successful.”

“You have to invest all your time, energy and money into your company. No risk. No reward.”

“You should only create a company to sell it.”

“The customer is always right.”

“You need to spend a ton of money on marketing.”

“Growing quickly is the key to success.”

Some things you will DEFINITELY want to check out:

Rework (Amazon Link) written by David and Jason Fried. It is a quick read and will make you think and act.

Hilarious video on Rework (and GREAT promotional ideal).

Sortfolio: David mentions this as a great resource to find quality web designers.

37 Signals: Unique software for businesses including Basecamp, Highrise, Backpack and more.

David’s Site: Loud Thinking His speeches are REALLY entertaining.

Signal Vs. Noise: Their blog focused on design and usability.

This episode of RISE is sponsored by:

Our local presenting sponsor Johnny Londoff Chevrolet. Here is my interview with Johnny talking advice on customer service, family business, cars and more. Plus you can get supplier pricing (no haggling) just by mentioning RISE (cool!).

And MB Consulting Group. Why waste your time dealing with geeky stuff? Computer servers and all that IT stuff. MB Consulting is basically your expert outsourced IT department that is actually affordable for entrepreneurs. CEO Ryan Mortland really understands entrepreneurship and outsourcing. Why? Because he is an entrepreneur. Here is my interview with Ryan where we discuss outsourcing, IT and entrepreneurship.

  • Great stuff. Would love it if you could have an MP3 of these great interviews available so I could listen on my Zune. Otherwise I love the focus this of this interview.
  • Thanks for doing this! I think David has a lot of good ideas and he's been successful with developing Ruby on Rails and 37 Signals. Some of what he said I totally agree with...but there is one thing that he said that bothered me: he said not to concentrate on the future of your business, only to concentrate on the now. I think it's important to concentrate on both. I know of another business that is no where as successful as it could be because the owner was/is so concentrated on the now with no thoughts about the future. If the owner took at least one day a week to think about what he could do to improve his business for the future, he would be much more successful.

I know that is just one business. But at the same time, it's important to have some kind of vision for the company. This vision could definitely change depending on the industry and other circumstances. But having a vision can definitely be a strong driving force for a company to succeed.

Just like this video, it's the visionaries that move the human race forward:

  • Cassie - That is a great point. Thanks for sharing.

I'm definitely in the school of both.

Focusing on now but a vision for the future. Of course, the vision can change. I'm more of a fan of doing, but also realize the issues of scalability, etc. which take more thought.

Last year, I took a big week for planning and brainstorming and it was very helpful for my business especially since I'm so run & gun.

    I'm with ya!
  • David, David, great chat. Thanks.

I don't read business books, because they're often idiotic. But, Rework is fresh, in the sense that it's classic, and cuts to the core of business.

    Keep up the good work.
  • Adam - Right on! Glad you enjoyed it and I also loved how fluff-free Rework is.
  • Enjoyed this. David touched on a critical point that it seems most people just don't understand, which is that the concept of overnight success is ridiculous. One of my favorite blog posts on the subject of overnight success was written by Paul Buchheit (gmail creator, Friend Feed founder, etc.): http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2009/01/overnight-success-takes-long-time.html
  • Really good piece! EVERYONE I talk to/interview falls into that slow build category. There is normally a place it takes off, but it took lots of time and building blocks. Those that really want to build a brand and business vs. the quick rise seem to be the most successful.
  • Thanx David gr8 interview and Brian love the out teach philosophy. I have worked for my father in our family business for 24 years. He has never tried to close sales by giving the biggest discount, or putting any focus on the price for that matter. The out teach philosophy is the basis for my dads success. The competition never seems to get it.
  • Doug - Great takeaway and my pleasure. I 100% agree. If you can out-teach, out-educate, out-inspire, you will out-sell without being "salesy"
  • Great interview David.
  • Thanks Brian. DHH is the man :)
