Why You Should Start A Blog & Is There A Better Name Than Blogging?

This clip is from Great Day St. Louis on CBS KMOV 4 where I talk monthly on hot topics in technology and business.

Ahhh blogging. Probably the BEST opportunity there is right now in the do-it-yourself marketing and promotion world.

On Great Day St. Louis, I discussed the very basics along with some of my favorite St. Louis blogs including Urban Review STL and MyMommyManual.

Even though there HAS to be a better name for it. To me, blogging just sounds relatively old school because of the ways blogs “were.”

Blogs used to be places where:

-Teenagers would only write random thoughts.

-It was not viewed as interesting simply a journal.

-All business blogs were press releases and updated maybe once a month if we were all “lucky.” (Unfortunately this is still WAY too true in some cases)

-Video was not an option.

-Audio was not an option.

-It was not easy.

Now:

Everything is easy. Wordpress makes it that way.

Blogs have become media and not just random thoughts. Beautiful design. Compelling content. More reflecting an interactive magazine than a blog of the past.

Plus it is never been easier to add audio and video if you choose.

Which begs the question as we evolve: Is there a better name than blogging?

  • I agree - we often find resistance in clients who heard about "blogging" based on basement hiding nerds and bad teenage poetry. The term alone is awkward. Corporate execs and small biz owners need to learn that it has been embraced by mainstream media and is a welcomed way to communicate with your clients and colleagues. But should NOT be a collection of press releases!
  • Very well said!! Both extremes cause problems.

Thanks for the props, David! Love your thoughts on what makes a successful "blog." It's a great way to share what you are passionate about (in our case, all things PARENTING!) and like you are doing with The Rise to the Top, your passion for your niche attracts others who are also passionate about the same things.

This is one of the reasons that MyMommyManual.com is so important — it provides moms/parents with the opportunity to connect with EACH OTHER, to be part of a community of like-minded parents.

Quite honored that you mentioned us, of course. Keep on being inspiring, David!

p.s. And I agree with you and other SM pundits about the label. Interesting how those new to social media perceive "blog" to be progressive while those that have been in the space awhile cringe a bit at the term.
  • My pleasure Ria. You guys rock to say the least. And the passion shines through.

Exactly my point on the term. It is sort of in that in between phase of the old guard not loving it and new folks still embracing it.

It's a good question David. Quite often in the organisation where I work I will deliberately not use the word blog when either trying to get someone to start a Blog, or when trying to get others to follow the content and/or participate. I have not yet come up with an alternative name, but quite often I'll just use the word website.
  • Frank - Me too. Social and interactive website. Long...but sort of conveys it :)
  • I started blogging on behalf of my business last month and I LOVE it !

  • Very cool, Chris. Welcome to the blogging world :)
  • Cool stuff David. I think maybe we could call it social journalism :).
  • I like it, hah!
  • Nice work David. I have been using Squarespace.com. Costs a little more, but pretty user friendly and the designs look professional.

I was thinking of a fresh term for blogs - maybe call it Frogging?
  • Squarespace is definitely cool. Sort of like a mix of Tumblr and Posterous as well.

    Frogging eh?
